Early Life in Australia

Bazzana grew up in Sydney and played for the Sydney Blue Sox in the Australian Baseball League from 2018 to 2021, as a teenager competing against professionals. Baseball runs in the family: his father played junior baseball for Queensland alongside Dave Nilsson, Australia’s most famous MLB player, who later managed Bazzana at the 2026 World Baseball Classic (MLB.com).

College Career at Oregon State

Bazzana moved to the U.S. to play for Oregon State, one of college baseball’s top programs, and became one of the best hitters in the country:

  • 2023: named MVP of the Cape Cod Baseball League, the top summer league for college players.
  • 2024: led the Pac-12 in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging, home runs, walks and runs. His 26 home runs set Oregon State’s single-season record, he broke the school’s career home run record, and he was named Pac-12 Player of the Year.

ESPN’s pre-draft coverage singled him out among the young players in contention for the top pick.

The 2024 MLB Draft: A Historic No. 1 Pick

The Guardians picked Bazzana first overall in July 2024 and signed him for $8.95 million. Two firsts:

  • The first Australian-born player ever taken No. 1 in the MLB Draft
  • Cleveland’s first-ever No. 1 overall pick

His rise from the Australian Baseball League to the top of American baseball shows how far players from non-traditional baseball countries can go. The link is MLB.com’s video interview with him about being drafted.

MLB Debut and Rookie Season (2026)

Debut: Cleveland called Bazzana up in late April 2026. He debuted on April 28 against the Tampa Bay Rays, batting seventh and playing second base, and went 0-for-2 with two walks in a 1–0 loss (MLB.com). Manager Stephen Vogt said the team needed “a little jolt.”

First home run: May 8, against the Minnesota Twins.

All-Star: despite debuting at the end of April, Bazzana was named a 2026 All-Star through player balloting. He’s the fourth Australian MLB All-Star, after Dave Nilsson (1999), Grant Balfour (2013) and Liam Hendriks (MLB.com).
