Taking a Closer Look at the Difference Between Health and Wellness

2062

We are all concerned about our health, whether we’re relatively healthy people or have multiple medical conditions. But, have you really thought about your wellness lately? The two terms are semi-interchangeable. They mean very different things, although, they align with each other with the fact that one cannot achieve complete health without wellness and vice versa. So, let’s take a look at the difference between health and wellness.

What is the Difference Between Health and Wellness?

The definition of health and wellness must actually be broken down into two separate definitions. But, how is wellness different from health, you ask?

Wellness vs Health

Health equates to your medical history, in a nutshell. If you have a thyroid imbalance, you cannot be considered completely healthy. Likewise, if you have a heart condition, your health faces adversity.

However, even with health “problems”, you can achieve overall wellness in many realms of your life. The better your wellness, the more likely your health will improve, and the better your health, chances are your overall wellness will be more manageable.

Let’s take a look at some of the various types of wellness you should shoot for in order to live a healthier lifestyle.

Physical Wellness

Most people are not 100% healthy. But, even if you are, you could still be suffering from a lack of physical wellness.

To achieve this goal, you must eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. Don’t smoke and reduce alcohol consumption to allow your body to be, well, well!

Emotional Wellness

Emotional wellness aligns with mental health. To be mentally healthy means that you do not have any type of mental illness, however, to be lacking emotional wellness means that you could be more susceptible to a mental illness like depression or anxiety.

To maintain emotional wellness, it’s important to establish healthy boundaries with friends and family and decompress when you’re stressed out. Overall, you need to practice healthy relationships that exude positivity.

Social Wellness

Social wellness is not just about your close relationships, but rather, includes social connections outside the home and work. Of course, these are important relationships, too, but they shouldn’t be the only people you engage with.

Get out and about to improve your social wellness which will inevitably help your emotional wellness. Learn to give yourself to others and to receive their friendship.

If you can find solutions to improve your social wellness, you’ll be surprised how many other aspects of your life will be affected.

Spiritual Wellness

Spiritual wellness is the most important factor in maintaining a healthy life for many individuals of every race, creed, and color. It’s an excellent way to care for your mind and body through different avenues of practice such as meditation or prayer and even sacrifice.

Wellness and Health for Your Health and Wellness

To know the difference between health and wellness is to be well AND healthy. It’s important to remember that you can’t have one without the other and therefore you must strive to achieve the ultimate outcomes on both fronts.
