How SARMs Legal?: The Key Facts You Need to Know

Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) are one of the biggest trends in weightlifting today. They consist of different supplements that target different androgen receptors, which help users gain muscle and lose fat. When following a proper SARMs regimen, users can expect to gain 30 pounds of muscle. But legality is one of the biggest SARMs topics that have come up. If you’re in the U.S., there are many uncertainties in how SARM use is monitored. Not only that, but the law may change over time. So, are SARMs legal? Here’s the most comprehensive (and easiest) guide.

What Are SARMs?

First, let’s gain a better understanding of SARMs. These are synthetic performance-enhancing drugs that work similarly to anabolic steroids. They bind to androgen receptors which mimic the effects of testosterone.

Users will not only lose fat and gain muscle, but SARMs help the muscles recover quickly. That means you can exercise more without suffering from pain and fatigue.

This process is important to athletes for several reasons:

  • Testosterone contributes to fat loss and muscle growth
  • Testosterone levels decrease as we age

Most of our bodies can manage and regulate testosterone levels. However, bodybuilders and athletes may rely on testosterone for performance and aesthetics.

In addition to these reasons, SARMs are popular among bodybuilders because they reduce the chances of muscle loss and increase protein synthesis.

Are SARMs safe? SARMs have had very few clinical trials. While there are those who there aren’t many SARMs side effects, it’s impossible to determine this without proper research.

Different Types of SARMs

There are many types of SARMs that users can take, including:

  • Anabolic
  • Ostarine MK-2866
  • Testolone
  • Andarine

While SARMs offer athletic benefits, overproducing testosterone isn’t beneficial for anyone. If you take any of these SARMs, you’ll have to undergo Post-Cycle Therapy. This is where you’ll take other supplements to even out your hormonal levels.

Is SARMs Legal on a Federal Level?

Under U.S. federal law, SARMs are completely legal to own and sell.

That means you can take SARMs as a consumer but you can also sell them under your own private business. You can also buy SARMs from these businesses and websites, such as umbrellalabs.is.

However, they are illegal to sell for human consumption. That’s because SARMs haven’t been approved for consumption and there are safety concerns to note.

But this isn’t the only concern to note. We have to identify if SARMs are known as a controlled substance.

Are SARMs a Controlled Substance?

In short, a “controlled substance” is a fancy word for an illegal drug. These drugs have been shown to affect one’s health and these substances are regulated by the government. The federal government has a scheduled list of controlled substances that determine the drug’s dangers and how they’re monitored.

So, are SARMs a controlled substance? Yes and no. In 2018, the SARMs Control Act was passed to make SARMs a schedule III controlled substance. In this case, it would be illegal to sell, make, take, and even possess SARMs.

But Congress has been facing delays thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues. What this means is Congress hasn’t had a chance to debate the bill and come to a decision. As of now, the bill hasn’t been passed — but that doesn’t mean it can’t be passed.

What About on a State Level?

Just about the SARMs Control Act hasn’t passed yet doesn’t mean SARMs use may not be illegal. It all depends on how the states monitor SARMs use.

As of now, no state has outlawed the use of SARMs. But states seem to be waiting for the SARMs Control Act to pass.

Chinese Manufacturing and Exporting

Lots of SARMs and SARMs products are actually made in China. For example, there are Chinese manufacturers that make the raw powder used in many American SARMs products.

When the SARMs Control Act was originally going through Congress, China received lots of pressure from the U.S. This caused China to ban the export and manufacturing of SARMs.

Does this mean buying SARMs is forbidden in the U.S.? Not at all. But it does make SARMs more expensive since sellers have limited resources to create and sell their products. Don’t worry, many American sellers are finding SARMs manufacturers in the U.S., making products more accessible.

Does Anyone Regulate the Sell of SARMs in the U.S.?

As of now, the FDA regulates the sale of SARMs. Not only that, but the FDA currently warns users against taking SARMs.

The FDA guidelines for selling SARMs are a bit murky. As stated previously, there are no studies that confirm the safety of SARMs, specifically for humans.

Without human clinical trials, the FDA can’t allow sellers to mention anything about SARMs and human consumption. This means SARMs sellers can’t state any side effects, recommend a dosage, or give any other advice in regard to its usage.

How can SARMs be sold? They can be sold and distributed as a research chemical.

SARMs and Sports

One of the toughest legal markets for SARMs is in the world of professional sports. Most SARMs are currently prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

That’s because SARMs not only manipulate muscle building but also many bodily processes. They’re said to be performance enhancers, which are banned in professional sports.

Is SARMs Legal? Yes and No

It’s time to answer the million-dollar question — are SARMs legal in the U.S.? Technically, yes. However, they’re heavily monitored. Since there are very few trials, they’re not sold for human consumption — only for research.

Does that mean you can’t buy SARMs? On the consumer end, there are no federal or state laws against possessing and taking SARMs. However, no professional athlete can take SARMs.

Since there are few safety trials and manufacturers aren’t allowed to provide dosing instructions, you’ll have to take them under your own discretion, understand the safety risks, and ensure you buy them from a reputable source.
