UVA Baseball Challenge continues in Wilmington, North Carolina with games versus Ohio on Saturday. And UNC-Wilmington on Sunday before the 2023 Virginia uva baseball season gets underway on Friday at 2 p.m. at Disharoon Park.

In 2022, UVA finished third in the ACC Coastal standings with a record of 39-19 overall and 17-13 in ACC play. UVA also received a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament but lost in the Greenville Regional. The Cavaliers lost 86% of the innings from their pitching staff from the previous season. But they still return the majority of their field starters from that club. Thankfully for UVA. Brian O’Connor got to work during the winter and acquired a number of crucial reinforcements via. The transfer portal. Including six pitchers.

The Atlantic Coast Conference. Which once again seems to be one of the finest in all of collegiate baseball. Should provide the Cavaliers with the components they need to contend. The conference is led by Jake Gelof, Kyle Teel, and a superb class of sophomores who shone in their first season at UVA.

Let’s examine the roster and schedule for the 2023 Virginia baseball season as the season is ready to start.

Dream Team UVA Baseball

The biggest amount of rookies since the Brian O’Connor era of UVA baseball are on the Virginia squad in 2023 with 21 new players. That’s excellent news because the Cavaliers required reinforcements following the roster’s devastation by the 2022 MLB Draft, which targeted Virginia’s pitching staff in particular.

Three pitchers and four players from UVA were chosen in the 2022 MLB Draft: Nate Savino, Brandon Neeck, Chris Newell, and Matt Wyatt. Will Geerdes and Devin Ortiz were later signed as undrafted free agents. Along with losing some important bullpen players to graduation, Virginia also lost second baseman Max Cotier when he went to West Virginia.

With the losses of Nate Savino, Brian Gursky, Brandon Neeck, Devin Ortiz, Paul Kosanovich, Matt Wyatt, Dylan Bowers, and Will Geerdes, Drew Dickinson’s UVA pitching staff will have a completely different look this spring.

Virginia Starting With The Notable Returning Pitchers

Starting with the notable returning pitchers, Virginia brings back the 6’10” junior lefty Jake Berry, who looks to make a big step forward this season after striking out 69 batters to 26 walks in 56.1 innings of work in 2022. He had a 4.79 ERA in 20 games, including nine starts. Berry isn’t in the starting weekend rotation to start the season, but it’s expected that he’ll have more than a few opportunities to start this spring.

Drew Dickinson’s UVA pitching staff will look entirely different this spring as

a result of the departures of Nate Savino, Brian Gursky, Brandon Neeck, Devin Ortiz, Paul Kosanovich, Matt Wyatt, Dylan Bowers, and Will Geerdes.

Dual-Sport Sensation Jay Woolfolk

The 6’10” junior lefty Jake Berry, who expects to make a significant improvement this season after striking out 69 hitters to 26 walks in 56.1 innings of work in 2022, is one of the key returning pitchers for Virginia. In 20 games, including nine starts, he had a 4.79 ERA. Berry isn’t in the starting lineup for the opening weekend of the season, but it’s anticipated that he’ll get plenty of chances to start this spring.

As he attempts to balance playing baseball and football, the dual-sport sensation Jay Woolfolk will be one of the season’s most captivating narratives. To create a strategy for Woolfolk this spring, Brian O’Connor and UVA pitching coach Drew Dickinson have repeatedly met with Virginia head football coach Tony Elliott and quarterbacks coach Taylor Lamb. According to reports, Woolfolk will throw a football as part of his typical baseball throwing warm-ups.

When UVA spring football season starts on March 14th, things will only become more intriguing on that front. Woolfolk had a 2.87 ERA in 28 outings and 37.2 innings thrown as a true freshman in 2022, striking out 55 hitters to only 20 walks. Woolfolk, who throws a fastball that reaches the upper 90s, has a bright future in professional baseball, but it appears that in fall he will also be vying for the starting quarterback position for the Virginia football team.
